HEC-PrePro: A GIS Preprocessor for
Lumped Parameter Hydrologic Modeling Programs
By Ferdinand Hellweger and David R. Maidment
ABSTRACT
This thesis documents a procedure called HEC-PrePro, which was developed
by the author. The purpose of the procedure is to automate the translation
of data from a geographic information system (GIS) data structure to
a hydrologic data structure used by lumped parameter hydrologic modeling
programs. HEC-PrePro is capable of identifying seven hydrologic elements
(subbasins, reaches, sources, sinks, junctions, diversions, and reservoirs)
as well as connectivity among them. The procedure was implemented in
ARC/INFO's Arc Macro Language (AML) and ArcView's Avenue programming
language. In both implementations the data are written to an ASCII file
which can be read by the hydrologic modeling program. Four system applications
are documented.
