Introduction
This module contains educational material related to the EPA BASINS simulation program. BASINS (Better Assessment Science Integrating Point and Nonpoint Sources) is a simulation program which links ArcView with water quality models. The module contains a slide presentation and a conference paper describing EPA's BASINS software package, prepared by Andrew Battin for the 1998 ESRI User's Conference. This CD does not contain the BASINS software or data but these can be downloaded from the EPA Basins homepage: http://www.epa.gov/OST/BASINS/. As part of the Basins model, users can download a very comprehensive package of data describing the watersheds of the United States from the Basin home page. These data are partitioned by 8-digit Hydrologic Unit Code regions, of which there are about 2000 in the nation. The slide presentation shows more information on what data are available. The new items described in the 1999 presentation of Basins compared with the 1998 version include new capabilities for delineating watersheds from digital elevation model data, and for describing the geometry of the stream channel. Also described is progress on including new models to Basins: the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT), a modified version of Generalized Watershed Loading Function (GWLF) model and the Environmental Fluid Dynamics Code (EFDC).
